The California Nutmeg is a conifer that is similar in appearance to a Douglas Fir or Redwood, with drooping branch tips and deep green, glossy needles. Its needles are long and flat, with a very sharp point. The fruit is a cone-like structure that looks similar to a small plum; it turns from pale green to purple [29].

Native to shady, mountainous canyons that receive ample rainfall, it prefers a moist environment and well-drained soil in part-shade. [17]
