Landscape: Bitter Cherry

Full sun Low water Hummingbirds Butterfly Deer resistant

Latin: Prunus emarginata

Plant type: Deciduous tree or shrub

Size: Depends on elevation

Light: Full sun

Water: Moderate

Zone: 4 to 8

Bitter Cherry is deciduous, growing as a shrub to 8’ at higher elevations and as a tree to 40’ at lower elevations. In summer, it is covered with a profusion of white flowers which develop in autumn into clusters of bitter, red berries that attract birds and mammals. [41]

This plant is not easily available in the landscape trade, and more research is needed to determine how this performs in a garden setting.
