Bearberry is a low-growing, spreading, evergreen shrub with small, shiny, dark green leaves born on reddish brown stems. Small, white to pink flower clusters appear in spring and are followed by red berries. It performs best within its native habitat in the high mountains or near the coast. It is not tolerant of high heat, and does better with afternoon shade and moderate water when grown in hot, inland environments [20]. Many cultivars of Bearberry are available.
